If the recently staged Spirited Away brought a world-class theatrical production to the Chinese market with zero time lag, opening a magnificent door of fantasy for Chinese audiences, then the HYPER PROJECTION stage play Haikyu!! arriving this midsummer undoubtedly presents a grand carnival for Generation Z — a gift to every Chinese audience that loves youth and passion.

In recent years, China's performance market has been riding a powerful wave of "2D"-inspired stage plays. More and more "2.5D stage plays" adapted from well-known anime and manga IPs have crossed the seas and won the hearts of countless Chinese audiences with their faithful recreation of the original works and innovative stage presentation. Amid this boom, another masterpiece — the stage play Haikyu!! — has officially announced the start of its China tour, adding fuel to this scorching summer season.
The largest overseas production in Weekly Shonen JUMP history — six cities join forces to unleash a volleyball craze

Reportedly, this is not only the Haikyu!! stage play series' first tour of the Chinese mainland, but also the largest overseas production ever staged by its publisher, manga giant Shueisha's Weekly Shonen JUMP.
Starting August 16, the China tour has officially raised its curtain, playing in the six cities of Shanghai, Changsha, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shenzhen and Beijing in turn, for a total of 39 performances. Such scale and reach not only demonstrates the producer's extraordinary confidence in the Chinese market, but also confirms from the sidelines the strong fan base and cultural influence of the Haikyu!! IP in China. From the southern coast to the capital region, a Haikyu!! craze spanning all of China is ready to erupt.
A ten-year promise and brand-new faces: the "original" emotion, made for Chinese audiences

As fans of the Haikyu!! stage play know well, since its premiere in 2015 the series has produced 11 productions in Japan, fully telling the inspiring story of the Karasuno High School volleyball club — from a fallen powerhouse mocked as "crows that can't fly" to a finely honed, strongest team returning to the national stage. The production chosen for this China tour is where the series' dream began: a newly upgraded version based on the 2015 premiere and the 2016 revival "The View from the Summit." This means Chinese audiences will witness with their own eyes the starting point where Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama first meet and the "fallen powerhouse" Karasuno takes flight again, reliving the most primal, purest emotion of the original work.
For this momentous China tour, the production team assembled a brand-new cast to breathe fresh life into the classic characters. These youthful faces full of boyish spirit seem to break through the dimensional wall, stepping straight out of Haruichi Furudate's original manga. Raimu Ninomiya, who plays protagonist Shoyo Hinata, and Shoa Hara, who plays Tobio Kageyama, will form the new "KageHina duo" — how they use their bodies and performances to portray the unique chemistry between these "strongest teammates" is a focal point for fans.
Notably, this China tour also invited Worry Kinoshita, chief director of the original stage play series, to direct — adding considerable weight to this production. At the press conference the day before the premiere, when a reporter asked Director Kinoshita to score the China tour, the director did not hesitate to give it full marks! This only heightens expectations for the quality of the show.
Opening-night acclaim:The "revolving turntable" and "hyper projection": an audiovisual feast beyond mere recreation
"Like being courtside at a real volleyball match" — this has been the core philosophy of the Haikyu!! stage play series since its inception. To recreate the ever-changing sense of speed and power of a 2D volleyball match on a 3D stage, the creative team developed a unique staging technique called "HYPER PROJECTION" (hyper projection).
At its core, the system deeply integrates the actors' live performance with precisely choreographed multimedia projections, lighting and music. When the "revolving turntable" stage beloved by fans begins to rotate, together with the actors' explosively dynamic, dance-like choreography, the back-and-forth of the match unfolds before your eyes like flowing water.
Even more stunning, the manga's panel layouts, speed lines, and even onomatopoeia like "BAM!" and "WHOOSH!" appear in real time through HD projections on the backdrop and floor, seamlessly synced with the actors' movements to create the visual spectacle of a "manga leaping off the page." Over the full 150 minutes (including intermission), audiences will take away not only the satisfaction of a faithful "ultimate recreation" of the classic story, but an immersive audiovisual feast that engages every sense.
When love crosses mountains and seas: the boundless future of the 2.5D stage play
From the earlier wave of "2D"-inspired stage plays to this six-city Haikyu!! tour, a clear business trend has quietly emerged: a new model of "cultural-tourism audiovisual experience" built on high-quality manga IP content is becoming one of the new engines of the cultural consumption market. Today's audiences are no longer content with passive consumption — they willingly set out for what they love, crossing mountains and seas, all for one immersive, high-quality audiovisual experience.
Represented by this Haikyu!! production, the 2.5D stage play — a unique art form suspended between the virtual and the real — is showing enormous growth potential in the Chinese market, powered by strong fan loyalty and emotional resonance. It is not only an extension of the value of top manga IPs, but also creates an entirely new social and cultural space where like-minded fans find a sense of belonging in the theater.
